Seventh meeting

Sixth meeting was quite a special one, because we decided to go to the Moomin museum in Tampere-talo. We found out there would be a free-of-charge entrance day to the museum and decided to take advantage of that. Unfortunately you’re not allowed to take any pictures in the museum, so there won’t be any attached to the post. The experience was new also to me, because despite having lived in Tampere for some time now, I haven’t  visited the museum before. It really felt like an adventure since neither of us knew anything about it beforehand 😀 The museum has two floors, in which both there are some cool miniatures about scenes in the original books and in the bottom floor you were able to even watch the series on a cozy sofa.

During the meeting I told about the Moomins as a franchise, as well as the author Tove Jansson and shared the Finnish names for the different creatures seen in the museum. We sparked some very insightful conversation, not only about Moomins but entertainment industry and cartoons in general. We sat down and watched a little piece of the animated series as well, and tried to find out if you could watch it somewhere on the internet with english subtitles. The tour around the museum was amazing, and both enjoyed it greatly. After that, we stopped by the souvenier shop that was filled with all kinds of cute Moomin themed goodies. I ended up purchasing two new mugs, and my pair got some sweet postcards as a memoir of the visit. All in all, a very nice way of spend a meeting. I can definitely recommend the Moomin museum to anyone!

Sixth meeting

For out fifth meeting, we had planned some cooking. My pair had invited me to her place to cook some foods typical to her culture, so that was what we did! Beforehand I got to make some choosing on what type of a dish I would like and we went on based on that. Throughout the cooking session, we talked about typical foods to each of our cultures, cooking as a hobby in general and just about a lot of things. Cooking together was really nice. We also ended up doing kind of an impro dessert, which turned out just as nice as the main course. The food was delicious, and it was awesome to get a glimpse of what kind of food people eat in other parts of the world.

Fifth meeting

For the fourth meeting, we decided to go on a stroll through Stockmann since there was a sales campaign going on. During the meeting, we looked at the different products they had on sale and discussed about those. Since there are quite a lot of clothes on sale, we ended up talking quite a bit about fashion in both of our home countries and I taught my pair names of items of clothing in Finnish. We also got a good look at some well-known Finnish design brands such as Marimekko, Iittala and of course, the beloved Moomins. I gave short insights about each brand as we took a look at some of their products available. We also took some time to explore the book section, which then brought up discussion about stuff like cooking, history of Finland and more. All in all, it was very nice afternoon spent, even if neither of us found any good bargains at the end of the day.

Third and fourth meeting

Both our second and third meetings took place in cafes. The second time we met at Pella’s Cafe. The agenda for the meeting was mainly to just talk and to get to known each other a bit better. We also ended up going through some food and kitchen related words as well as phrases for situations like ordering something in a cafe.

For our third meeting we went to Robert’s Coffee. We discussed about hobbies and things we like, such as music and free time activities. We also talked about some cultural differenced regarding studying and schools as well as languages.

First meeting

I met with my pair for the first time on 21.2.2019. The meeting took place at TAMK, and we ended up finding a table in the library. I’m teaching my pair Finnish, and as it was the first meeting, we started from some very basic stuff; we went through the alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months and some basic greetings, as well as how to introduce yourself in Finnish and talked a bit about pronunciation and writing.  All in all, it was very fun, and I really enjoyed our meeting.
