Mexican food was the topic of this final meeting.
Basically, we learned to to make a plate, by using a video and text in Spanish language.
Nice to learn with a video, because is possible to follow the person who is leading the cooking and also watch the step he is mention. Good for the language.
It was interesting. Now, is good excuse to try it out !
During this meeting the topic of discussion was camping and outdoor activities.
We learned vocabulary related, like tienda de campaña, hamaca, fogata, caminata de bosque, serpientes, animales, etc..
We were using pictures and writting the words.
And some discussions about how a beautiful landscape can be contemplated.
In this meeting the topic was sports, we learned to write the name of the different sports.. with a special mention on football.
We used pictures and some videos, for watching most popular sports.
At the same time, good moment to remember the benefit that is asociated between sports and a good health…
For this time, we put aside the books and enjoy a presentation about Costa Rica.
Last meetings it has been very useful, however too much knowledge in a short time. Specially, when it has been a real learning of the Spanish language. So, time to take a break from the learning dynamics.
So, we had a presentation about Costa Rica modern history, including the moment on how Costa Rica became the first country in the world that abolish the military army. Also, a presentation of real pictures made by me around the country, by showing the things I have always seen with my eyes. So, presentation isn’t as a tourist brochure that shows only the good things. Duration: 1h 30 min
This meeting was the turn, to learn a very basic question/interaction in any language.
The famous question: What is your name? The name of a person, is one of the most important features of a person. Remember the name of a person, and calling someone by his real name has a positive effect.
We learned how to say What is your name? and also asking the name of someone: What is her/his name?
In both examples, we were practicing by using answers.
Simple, but very useful question.
During this meeting we were studying the nationalities, how to write them.
We got to know the name of the countries. Interesting, many countries are very similar in their original language, but many other changes a lot in Spanish. for Example: England- Inglaterra. Australia-Australia, Ireland-Irlanda.
Basically we made a list with three columns: 1-Country, 2- Nationality, 3- Language.
We keep attention on using correctly the male or female form of the nationality.
During the practice, we got to know different countries and languages. Also, the rules of the termination of nationality, seems to be diverse. Very difficult to determine the correct termination. Anyways, just the practice and the constant listen of the nationalities will make happen to remember.
Continue practicing Spanish again, now in fourth meeting.
It came the turn, to check a bit of theory..so we study a bit about infinitive verbs and its terminations.
Perhaps this is one of the difficult part of the language, because there are many exceptions to the basic rule, and plenty of verbs and how a same verb, take different meaning depending on the context. Well, that’s pretty much the same on most of languages.
Meeting was kind of theoretical, without the practical questions that we used to read and rehearse. Useful lesson, as we got in touch with many different verbs and the meanings.
Meeting place was cafeteria.
In third meeting we continue practicing questions and analyzing every part of the construction of the sentence.
For example: subject and its pronoun, verbs, prepositions.
Prepositions we found in the questions that have a time, or when going to some place.
Yangming asked, what’s the meaning of those prepositions? I answer that the meaning of prepositions are to help to put together words in a sentence. In order to give sense to an action or relation between words. I told there are more than 18 different.
Meeting place was cafeteria.
We checked again about verbs and conjugation.
After Spanish lesson, we continue with Chinese and China topics.
For this second meeting we reviewed topics from first meeting for a short moment. Checked again the pronunciation and listen any question that came out.
We meet again at same place than in the first meeting.
Then we start practicing from questions that were in the written material.
Practicing with practical questions is a good idea, because they are useful, and also teach many things of the language. Probably not very easy, it is quite challenging, but right away it shows the structure of the language.
We learned a bit about verbs and conjugation, prepositions. And learning overall about the structure of the Spanish language.
Then we switched to Chinese and discuss about topics of Chinese culture. Things like: family, marriage, children, elderly, etc. In western, we are used to see marriage in a church, while in China they don’t do in church.
In Finland, government stimulate and would want Finnish families to have children. While, in China 2 children max is the norm, if having more children, family will have to pay more tax to government.
For this first meeting we decided to start at school, so we first meet at library, but later we decided to go somewhere to talk louder, in order to repeat sentences and pronunciations of the language.
We start with Spanish language. From basics, like numbers and days of the week. Yangming was able to pronounce very well, it was understandable.
Numbers in Spanish for Yangming were some sort of familiar, however days of the week was new knowledge.
After reading and pronouncing numbers, we start with the concrete questions, that Daniel prepare before hand. Questions were made, with the intention of using numbers and days of the week. Questions were intented to simulated situations, in which Yangming may face in a future in a Spanish speaking country.
From all questions for practice, we went through half of the questions, because it was time demanding understand questions that have different elements of the language. But in my opinion, learning can go faster and effective if jumping straight to practical use of the language, even without prior knowledge of the language.
For example, today we learnt that in Spanish language when referring things, things have a genre. Either male or female.
