Nur ein bißchen Finnisch

We had an extra meeting (again) with three participants on 28.9.2018 (me, Cindy and Melanie) in café Siilinkari. Purpose of that meeting was to teach some (useful) Finnish phrases to Cindy and Melanie, so I wasn’t learning German that time. And we thought it would be fine if only part of the group meets, but it turned out it’s not that simple. After all we all live under the same sun and we should take care of others.

So, humanity overpowered our previous thoughts about meetings, and we were a bit worried that Hanna won’t miss anything. That’s important to keep our learning/teaching processes running smoothly in our group, and therefore we decided that we won’t meet anymore with only three people to keep our group whole. That was a good and an unanimous decision. But of course unofficially anyone can feel free to meet anyone anytime anywhere. 😀

After all it was a nice meeting just before octoberfest! Later that night when I was having a nice time in Plevna with some friends, and I noticed this on the table, and instantly took a picture:

 

Cuarta quedada – Studying Part 2

We had our fourth meeting again at the school, where we decided to study more.

The went through the words we learned last time and learn some new, like colors. Here are the ones we learned.

Colores – Colors – Värit

  • rojo – red – punainen
  • amarillo – yellow – keltainen
  • azul – blue – sininen
  • verde – green – vihreä
  • marron – brown – ruskea
  • negro – black – musta
  • blanco – white – valkea

Then we thought it would be fun to watch some music videos in our languages and translate them. It was fun, but also useful, when we trained pronunciation. I think this is a fun way to learn new words and also it gives a good understanding or the language.

 

Library meeting (FIN – RUS)

Last week before the autumn break was really intense for student, because it was full of deadlines and exams, so we had very limited time for our meeting, but of course we couldn’t skip our session 🙂 So the next meeting place was library. And I have to admit that it was the most effective meeting so far.

When I came to library Maksim was already there and he found a shelf with Russian-Finnish books. After looking through I picked one of them and I think that book was ideal for studying both Russian and Finnish. It had texts with every day vocabulary, good tasks after texts and a small dictionary to each text with all possible unknown words we could meet while reading, that was handy.

Here is the book. I found it really easy to study with, so I will probably get it for personal use.

This time we were reading and translating texts, getting more into grammar andpaying attention to word formation. I wish we could stay and study more, but since it was Saturday library was about to close, so we had to finish, but I think we should try it may be one more time or try to study in ou university library could be a good idea for the next destination 🙂

 

Movie Day

This Sunday we decided that it was time for us to chill out a little bit, so we met at Anni’s appartment to watch a movie.

We thought that we could watch something that ilustrates our cultural background so we decided we could watch pixar’s Coco, because it’s almost Halloween and in Mexico that means it’s almost El Dia de los Muertos, which is the festivity represented in the movie.

Before the movie we talked about a little bit of cinema vocabulary like genres of movies, cameras, actors. Soon we found out that it’s difficult to find a movie in spanish with english subtitles because normally it’s the other way around so we struggled a bit with that.

During the movie we made a list of vocabulary based on family because it’s the main focus of the film and we also did this fill the gap thing with the main theme of the movie “Recuérdame”.  All in all, it was a good day and it was great to see these movie with mexican people that can explain to you how they celebrate this day.

Coco

Library (RUS-FIN)

We all had a really busy week because we had many exams coming, so we decided to meet quickly in the library and study hard. We borrowed some Russian textbooks and started to translate the text in Finnish. It was really effective way to study the language and Yulia wanted to buy the book for herself- the book was that good.

The library was closing early because it was Saturday so we needed to leave. After all, I think this was the best meeting when it comes to studying. We discussed the grammar and learned new sentences. I still couldn’t pronounce the word “вкусно” = herkullista correctly but maybe some day.. 😀

Next time we could do something funnier when Yulia comes back from Russia, but I think that we always have such a great time together, no matter what we do. Спасибо Maksim and Yulia!

 

Verb conguation part II

Yesterday (8th October 2018) was a very successfully day for all of us since we got some new insights in the verb conjugation of our target language or we had the possibility to practice our knowledge. Next week is our week off and for us exchange students it’s a great possibility to travel a bit without missing any lectures, therefore we decided to meet again this week because we won’t make it next week during the break.

We continued with the verbs in general. Verb type I is no longer a problem so I started to focus on the second verb type instead! These types of verbs end in -da/-dä. To find this type of verb’s infinitive stem, you remove the -da/-dä. Notice that the third person singular doesn’t get the final letter doubled like in verb type 1!

Example: juoda (to drink) / syödä (to eat)

This verb type is also rather easy, but the other verb types are not that easy. 😉

Anyway, it was fun to do some more grammar and have something to work on over the break before we continue with our language teaching!

Consonant gradation for verbs

Today’s (8th October 2018) meeting was all about grammar.

Unfortunately, everyone had quite a busy schedule, so we decided to meet between our lectures at TAMK.

We focused mainly on the conjugation of verbs and therefore on the consonant gradation of Finnish verbs. When conjugating verbs, you also need to think of consonant gradation. Each verb type has its own rules. Of course, we also covered some German verbs which we found useful to know. It was interesting to see that the entire group seem to have at least a little fun while doing grammar (it’s obviously necessary to know some basic grammar, but it can also be enjoyable) – especially if you found some rules and repetition in different words/verbs.

I already know quite a lot verbs, especially the basics:  kirjoittaa, nukua, lukea, puhua, tehdä, käyttää, myydä, ostaa, oddotta, olla, opiskella, syödä, juosta, juoda, mennä, tulla, istua, asua, kysyä, katsoa, sanoa

Writing them down here makes me extra aware of how many verbs I already know by heart! That’s amazing! The easiest way for me to learn them is to remember to which verb-type they belong.

For example, the most common is Type 1, which ends with a vocal + ä/a (asua, istua, sanoa, kysyä …) this type is probably the easiest to conjugate since you only cut of the ä/a and add the ending of the person

asua → asu

asun / asut / hän asuu / me asumme / te asutte / he asuvat

It’s easy like that! I wish everything of the Finnish grammar would stick in my head like that, but it’s still a long way to go. Anyway, even baby-steps will get me to a good level of Finnish in the future! 🙂

Enjoying finnish Fall

We went for a walk to the Lake in Lapinkaari, because the weather was better than expected and we decided spontaneous to enjoy the finnish fall. On our way there we took turns speaking in french and german. It was quite hard to get into the language. We talked about german and french media and it got easier as we went on and corrected each other straight away.

We arrived at a pier and sat there for a long time, talked about how we celebrate Christmas in each country and enjoyed the nature. 

Next time we want to speak for a longer period in each language. Every time it’s hard to get going, but afterwards we are remembering much more vocabulary and it gets easier. We already scheduled our next meeting for Wednesday.

2nd Study afternoon – sing along

Hi! Last Monday, 8th of October, we went to the Y-Campus, at TAMK, to spend our second study day. On our first study afternoon we talked about basic vocabulary and our intention for this second meeting was translating two songs (one in Spanish and another one in Finnish).

At the beginning, we started remembering the things we learned in the previous meeting, so we repeated the days of the week, how to introduce ourselves or the numbers. We also focalized in their pronunciation (something that maybe is more difficult to remember). Then we talked a little bit about new vocabulary, as the names of the colors and, finally, we started with our purpose of the day, translating a song.

We decided to start with something easy, as a lullaby. Anni taught us a Finnish lullaby with the lyrics bellow, and she translated it while we were listening. Then, we taught Anni a Spanish childish song, and we sang it too. Later, we taught each other some other famous songs in our home countries. In conclusion, with this meeting we not only learnt new words, their pronunciation or how to use them, but also something really important which is part of the culture of a country: the music.

Study Day-Day 2

So after our first study day, the girls and I met again last monday to continue with our basic vocabulary and greeting.

We spend the first half of the “class” going over what we learned last time to refresh a bit and to see what could we do next. We went over days of the week, numbers, greetings and added colours and months to the ist. After that we thought that we could try to learn in a momre dynamic way. We come up with the idea to try to translate simple songs into each others languages, so Anni choose a Finnish lullaby for us, and we showed her a traditional spanish kids song.

We moved on to some other music and kid shows like the Moomins, to end up sharing mutual songs but in different languajes such as Hakuna Matata from The Lion King. It was son funny to listen to songs we already knew in a complete different languaje.

Over all, I think this day was more of a relaxed study day but also interesting because we could see each others culture based of the music we listen to as kids. I realized that it’s easier for me to learn a languaje if I listen to music and try to translate the lyrics than trying to memorize all the vocabulary. So I think I’ll keep doing some research on my own about Finnish music to help myself with the pronunciation and vocabulary.
